Benjamin Franklin in 1767

SOURCE: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
In this activity, students will read a selection from Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography in which he outlines his plan to become a more perfect human being. His "Thirteen Virtues" represent the very best of the American Enlightenment and the belief that human beings could improve themselves through their own hard work and without reliance on God. Students will be encouraged to see connections between these virtues and their everyday lives.
